NALDA Nigeria Strengthens Commitment to Rural Development

Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to rural development at the ICARRD+20 International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. The event brought together global leaders to discuss the future of agriculture and strategies for rural transformation.

Engagement at ICARRD+20 Conference

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I attended the conference alongside the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari (CON). Our participation underscored Nigeria’s strong commitment to agricultural reform and rural development.

The conference attracted heads of state, policymakers, and development experts. International organizations and civil society representatives also contributed to discussions focused on developing stronger rural economies. One of the most essential themes was the empowerment of smallholder farmers, who play a critical role in ensuring food security.

Participants emphasized the need for access to land, finance, and technology for rural communities. These elements are vital for promoting sustainable agricultural growth. Additionally, climate resilience was a prominent topic, with countries exploring policies to protect farmers from environmental risks while improving rural livelihoods.

Nigeria’s Agricultural Reforms and Initiatives

Nigeria took the opportunity at ICARRD+20 to spotlight its ongoing agricultural reforms, which prioritize food security and rural prosperity. Senator Abubakar Kyari stressed the necessity of strong agricultural policies and the importance of supporting farmers and enhancing rural infrastructure. These actions aim to increase productivity and alleviate poverty.

Furthermore, Nigeria is expanding rural development programs that encourage youth participation in agriculture. Young people are integral to the future of food production, and initiatives targeting them help ensure a robust agricultural sector.

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has a crucial role in Nigeria’s agricultural strategy. The agency focuses on developing farmland and promoting modern farming practices. NALDA ensures that farmers have access to land, supports mechanized farming, and facilitates cooperative development. These efforts actively help farmers to boost productivity and income.

Moreover, NALDA promotes youth engagement in agriculture, leading to greater involvement by young Nigerians in farming. This engagement not only strengthens food production but also generates jobs in rural areas. The agency also supports integrated farm estates, combining production, processing, and marketing within organized farming communities.

Strengthening Global Agricultural Partnerships

The ICARRD+20 conference further strengthened international cooperation in agriculture. Countries exchanged ideas, best practices, and discussed investment opportunities in rural sectors. Nigeria engaged with numerous international stakeholders, focusing on agricultural innovation and financing.

These partnerships are crucial for long-term agricultural growth. Global cooperation is essential to address food insecurity, especially in the context of climate change and increasing population pressures.

The conference delivered a clear message: rural communities must be central to development strategies. Farmers require better access to resources and markets to thrive. Nigeria’s agricultural reforms aim to meet these objectives, with institutions like NALDA driving positive changes.

By investing in agriculture, Nigeria can enhance food security while fostering economic opportunities. Continued efforts towards rural development will create jobs and expand local economies.

ICARRD+20 marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s agricultural journey. The country remains committed to building a resilient and inclusive rural economy for the future. Through effective reforms and engagement on the global stage, Nigeria is paving the way for a stronger agricultural sector that can sustain its population.
