Oando Clean Energy and Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have established a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a 1.2-gigawatt (GW) solar power project designed to provide electricity to millions of Nigerians. Once completed, this project will be the largest solar power initiative in Nigeria, marking a significant step forward in the country’s shift towards sustainable energy. Abubakar Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director and CEO of REA, praised the partnership as revolutionary, highlighting its potential to energize the renewable energy sector, expand electricity access, and generate jobs through local manufacturing.
A key feature of the project is the creation of Africa’s first solar module assembly plant, which will include a recycling line. This facility will not only manufacture new solar panels but also recycle old or defective panels into raw materials for various uses, thereby promoting sustainability in the industry. The first phase will involve a rollout of 600 megawatts (MW) of solar power, with completion expected by 2026.
This ambitious project is in line with Nigeria’s broader strategy to embrace clean energy solutions, decrease reliance on fossil fuels, and tackle ongoing power shortages that have hindered economic development. By enhancing solar photovoltaic infrastructure and boosting local manufacturing capabilities, the initiative aims to improve energy access across the country.
