Nigeria Mourns Death of Former Oyo State Governor, Dr. Victor Olunloyo

ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of the old Oyo State, who passed away recently. Olunloyo was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s academic and political landscape.

In a statement, President Tinubu described Olunloyo as a visionary leader, intellectual, and pioneer. He extended his condolences to the government and people of Oyo State and the Olunloyo family.

Olunloyo was a distinguished academic, earning a PhD in applied mathematics and number theory from St. Andrews University in Scotland at the young age of 25. He was appointed as a commissioner in the old Western Region at 27 and later served in key roles within the Western State.

He played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, serving as the founding rector of both The Polytechnic Ibadan and Kwara State Polytechnic.

Olunloyo’s tenure as governor of the old Oyo State was brief, cut short by a military coup. However, President Tinubu acknowledged his leadership and commitment to national development.

Olunloyo’s career spanned academia and politics, and he was known for his intellectual contributions and his commitment to education and national unity. His death marks the passing of a notable figure in Nigerian history
