Onakoya has achieved a remarkable milestone by exceeding the previous 61-hour record established by Norwegian players. This accomplishment is not only a testament to his endurance but also a significant act driven by purpose.
The chess marathon commenced on April 17, in collaboration with U.S. National Master Shawn Martinez.
“Here’s to all the dreamers! We’ve officially BROKEN THE RECORD,” Onakoya announced in an enthusiastic post on X (formerly Twitter).
He further expressed, “Every move, every hour, serves as a love letter to children who have never experienced the privilege of a second chance.”
As the founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Onakoya’s goal was to raise $1 million to establish a free school for homeless and underserved children in Nigeria.

“If you had 70 hours to change the world, what would you do? Not for recognition. Not for records. But for the quiet dreamers who need to witness someone take a leap—so they understand it’s possible to soar,” he wrote.
This record-breaking achievement marks yet another significant moment for the 29-year-old, who previously engaged in a personal challenge by playing chess for 60 consecutive hours in 2024.
