Nigerian Navy Foils Oil Smuggling, Shuts Down Illegal Refinery

The Nigerian Navy is demonstrating its unwavering commitment to combating illegal oil activities with a series of significant successes in its ongoing campaign. These recent operations highlight the Navy’s proactive approach to protecting Nigeria’s maritime environment, curbing oil theft, and safeguarding the nation’s economy.

On June 10, 2025, the Forward Operating Base Ibaka achieved a notable interception, seizing a wooden boat attempting to smuggle illegally refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as gasoline, to neighboring Cameroon. The vessel was heavily laden with drums containing the illicit fuel, destined for illegal distribution across the border. This interception not only prevented the illegal export of stolen resources but also disrupted the operations of those involved in the illicit trade.

Building on this success, on June 11, 2025, the Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA executed a strategic operation, discovering and shutting down an active illegal refinery located within the Obodo Omadino Community in Delta State. The illegal refining site was equipped with various components necessary for the illicit processing of crude oil, including a boat used for transportation, a pump for transferring fluids, crude oil storage pits used to hold the stolen raw material, and numerous drums filled with stolen crude oil, ready for refining. The shutdown of this refinery represents a significant blow to the illegal oil industry in the region.

These decisive actions underscore the Nigerian Navy’s dedication to its mission. Their vigilance, rapid response capabilities, and proactive measures are essential for deterring criminal activity, ensuring the responsible management of Nigeria’s oil resources, and protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s maritime domain. By consistently disrupting illegal oil operations, the Nigerian Navy is playing a crucial role in preserving the nation’s economic stability and environmental security
