Abuja, Nigeria – In response to escalating violence across Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the immediate deployment of a special squad to affected regions. This decision follows a series of recent attacks in states including Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto, resulting in the deaths of 21 people.
During a meeting with Squadron Commanders in Abuja on Tuesday, Inspector-General Egbetokun directed all Police Mobile Force squadrons to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on constant standby. This directive is effective immediately, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Recent weeks have witnessed a concerning surge in attacks against civilians, particularly in regions such as Plateau, Benue, and Enugu, raising serious concerns about public safety and security.
The Inspector-General emphasized the importance of these standby units being prepared to provide rapid support to state commands during crises, high-risk operations, or emergency situations. This proactive approach aims to strengthen the police’s ability to respond effectively to violence and restore peace in affected areas.
The deployment of these special units reflects the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to addressing rising violence and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. Continued vigilance and swift action are deemed crucial in tackling the challenges posed by banditry and insecurity across the country.
