The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has debunked widespread reports suggesting that water has been released from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, clarifying that such claims are entirely false and misleading.
In a statement issued on July 7, 2025, the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, confirmed that there has been no release of water from the dam. This clarification follows direct communication between the Minister and the Lagdo Dam Manager, Mr. Ahmad Bivoung, who confirmed that the dam is currently at a low water level of 2.06 meters, making any release impossible at this time.
“The information making the rounds about a supposed water release from the Lagdo Dam is false,” Prof. Utsev stated. “As of today, July 7, 2025, the dam remains at a very low level, and there has been no discharge. We are in continuous contact with Cameroonian authorities and will provide accurate updates as they become available.”
The Ministry further emphasized that it is maintaining constant and official communication channels with its Cameroonian counterparts and assured the public that any planned or unplanned water releases from the dam will be promptly and transparently communicated.
To this end, the Minister urged citizens, media outlets, and community leaders to disregard unverified reports and refrain from spreading panic. He called for public cooperation and vigilance, especially during this peak flood season, while encouraging people to rely only on verified government sources for flood-related updates.
Prof. Utsev also took the opportunity to reiterate the importance of adhering to existing flood preparedness and safety advisories issued by the Ministry and its relevant agencies. He advised residents of flood-prone areas to stay alert and follow guidance from local authorities and disaster response agencies.
Particularly, the Minister called on communities in Lokoja (Kogi State), Wurobokki (Adamawa State), and Makurdi (Benue State)—areas currently flagged for flood risk—to remain watchful and proactive in implementing early warning and evacuation protocols.
He encouraged the public to utilize the NIHSA Flood Dashboard, a digital platform developed by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), for real-time flood information, risk alerts, and emergency preparedness tools.
“The government is actively monitoring all major water bodies and river basins, and we are prepared to respond swiftly to any changes in water levels,” he added. “Let us remain calm, informed, and alert.”
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and proactive disaster risk management, urging all Nigerians to play their part by staying informed and prepared.
