Northern Nigeria Signals Strong Support for Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid

A prominent governor in Nigeria has declared that the country’s northern region will continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election. Abdullahi Sule, the governor of Nasarawa State, stated that the North would prioritize its collective interests and not be swayed by individual agendas.

“Whether he is the good, the bad, or the ugly, by the grace of God, we are bringing back Bola Ahmed Tinubu to continue as president of Nigeria,” Sule said, affirming his commitment to the president’s re-election campaign.

Sule’s declaration aligns with the position of the Arewa Think Tank, a northern-based advocacy group, which has refuted claims of division within the region regarding support for Tinubu. The group maintains that the North remains united in its intention to back the president for a second term.

As discussions surrounding the 2027 elections intensify, Sule’s comments come amid ongoing debates among political leaders and groups about the future direction of the country. The 2027 presidential race is expected to be highly contested, with various factions and interests within the northern region weighing their options. Sule’s statement underscores the perceived strength of support for Tinubu in the North, a region that holds significant political influence due to its large population.

“The North’s backing is a crucial factor in Nigerian elections,” explains political analyst Fatima Mohammed. “Historically, the region has played a decisive role in determining the outcome of presidential races.”

Potential for Division

Governor Sule emphasized that the region’s future should not be held hostage by personal or factional interests, calling for unity within the North to maintain its influential position in Nigerian politics.

While Sule and the Arewa Think Tank project an image of unity, analysts caution that underlying tensions and competing interests could emerge as the 2027 election draws closer.

“It’s important to remember that the North is not a monolith,” says Mohammed. “There are diverse ethnic and religious groups within the region, and their interests may not always align. Economic grievances and historical rivalries could also play a role.”

The 2023 presidential election saw Tinubu, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), win a closely contested race. However, the results were disputed by opposition parties, and the election exposed deep divisions within the country.

Looking Ahead

Governor Abdullahi Sule’s statement highlights the importance of the North in the upcoming 2027 election. His call for unity signals a desire to prioritize collective interests over personal differences. However, whether this unity will hold remains to be seen as the political landscape continues to evolve. The North’s support will undoubtedly be a significant factor in shaping the outcome of the 2027 race, but the potential for internal divisions cannot be ignored.
