The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has formally confirmed the appointment of seasoned journalist and media strategist, Mr. Yomi Odunuga, as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
The clarification comes in response to growing public interest and initial uncertainty surrounding the appointment, which had triggered speculations and conflicting reports in some media outlets and social media spaces.
In an official statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the Director of Information and Public Relations in the OSGF, Mr. Segun Imohiosen, addressed the confusion, affirming that Mr. Odunuga’s appointment is not only authentic but has already taken effect.
“We wish to officially confirm that the appointment of Mr. Yomi Odunuga as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is valid and currently in effect. He has since assumed duties and is working in that capacity,” the statement read.
Mr. Imohiosen noted that the clarification became necessary in light of recent misinformation and public discourse that created doubts about the status of the appointment. He urged the media and members of the public to rely solely on verified and official communication from government sources to avoid spreading false or incomplete information.
Yomi Odunuga brings with him decades of experience in journalism, political communication, and public affairs analysis. Until his new role, he served as the Group Politics Editor and Abuja Bureau Chief of The Nation newspaper, where he earned a reputation as a meticulous reporter and influential voice in Nigeria’s media landscape.
Widely respected for his analytical depth, objectivity, and professionalism, Odunuga’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by the SGF to strengthen public engagement, streamline communication, and ensure consistent messaging from his office.
Observers have described the choice as timely, especially in an era where public trust in government communication is critical. Odunuga is expected to play a key role in managing the SGF’s media relations, shaping public narratives, and ensuring that accurate and timely information is disseminated to citizens on the activities of the SGF and broader governmental initiatives.
His appointment also underscores the Tinubu administration’s recognition of the importance of experienced communicators in public service, particularly in advancing transparency, responsiveness, and strategic information management.
Since assuming office, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has been working to assemble a team of trusted and competent advisers to support his mandate of coordinating intergovernmental affairs and overseeing the implementation of federal policies and programmes.
With Odunuga now formally confirmed as his media adviser, the SGF’s office is expected to deepen its communication capacity, improve media engagement, and better connect with the public on matters of national interest.
The OSGF reiterated its commitment to open and transparent governance and encouraged the media to uphold journalistic integrity by verifying information through appropriate official channels.
