Over 300 billion FCFA is Required to Safeguard Lake Togo from Climate Change.

Lake Togo has established a strategic framework to combat the impacts of climate change. A strategic plan, validated on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in Aného, outlines a series of initiatives designed to adapt the lagoon system to climate change, with a projected budget of 305.1 billion FCFA.

The proposed actions focus on several key areas, including the sustainable management of water and biodiversity resources, the restoration of degraded ecosystems, and the creation of monitoring and rapid response systems for extreme events. The implementation of this plan is scheduled across three timeframes: 2030, 2040, and 2050.

Kotchadjo Kossi, an environmental protection expert at FAO, emphasized the necessity of involving local communities in these initiatives. “Given the adverse effects of climate change on the populations residing around Lake Togo, it is crucial to undertake collaborative efforts to safeguard the lagoon system and ensure the sustainability of local activities,” he noted.
