The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reaffirmed his commitment to modernising operations, strengthening investigative capacity, and deploying innovation to combat evolving crime across Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2026 National Police Day celebration at Eagle Square in Abuja, Disu said the Nigeria Police Force is being repositioned into an intelligence-led, technology-driven, and community-focused institution.
He stressed that policing in the 21st century must go beyond force, emphasising intelligence, professionalism, and respect for human rights as guiding principles.
“We are investing in training, technology, and community engagement. These are not future plans. They are actions in motion today,” he said.
Disu highlighted community partnership as central to effective policing, noting that security is a shared responsibility between law enforcement and citizens.
“The Police cannot succeed without the people, and the people cannot feel safe without the Police,” he added.
Reflecting on the significance of National Police Day, the IGP described it as a moment to honour fallen officers, assess progress, and renew commitment to reform.
He paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, assuring their families that their sacrifices would be honoured through improved standards and institutional reforms.
Disu also commended collaboration between the police, the Armed Forces, and other security agencies in maintaining national stability.
He pledged that under his leadership, the police would embrace integrity, enforce discipline, and rebuild public trust through consistent actions.
“This will be a new era for the Nigeria Police Force… where service is prioritised and trust is rebuilt,” he said.
The theme of this year’s celebration was “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”
