Software developers have created a system that utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assess the levels of smoke and harmful gases emitted by vehicles. Emmanuel Tuyizere, the founder of Greenalytic Ltd., stated that his team has designed specialized electronic devices that are installed within vehicles. These devices monitor pollution levels and transmit the data to an online dashboard accessible to drivers. ‘We have engineered electronic devices that operate in conjunction with software platforms to regulate vehicle emissions.
These devices are fitted in vehicles to provide continuous emission monitoring and relay the information to online dashboards,’ Tuyizere was quoted as saying by The New Times. This initiative aligns with the government’s strategy to implement more rigorous emissions testing starting in May 2025. According to the new regulations, emissions testing will be distinct from standard mechanical inspections, although both will still be conducted at the same testing facilities, referred to as Contrôle Technique.
For the first time, motorbikes will also undergo assessments for pollution and road safety. The government emphasizes that this initiative reflects Rwanda’s commitment to safeguarding public health and enhancing environmental cleanliness. Officials are urging vehicle and motorbike owners to regularly maintain their vehicles to comply with the new pollution standards.
