SERAP Seeks Court Order to Compel CBN to Disclose LGA Fund Allocations

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking to compel the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to disclose the amount of funds disbursed to each of the 774 local government councils (LGAs) since July of last year.

SERAP argues that this disclosure is necessary in light of the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment last year, which mandated the direct payment of local government funds from the Federation Account to the LGAs.

In a statement released on Sunday, SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, confirmed that the organization has taken the matter to court.

The statement references the Supreme Court’s July ruling that invalidated the State-Local Government Joint Account system, where monthly allocations for LGAs were previously deposited.
