A magistrate court in Abuja has granted bail to human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore, along with Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s disengaged lawyers, and 11 other defendants.
Sowore was arrested by the police on Thursday shortly after leaving the Federal High Court in Abuja for leading the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest into “restricted areas” in the city center.
Ejimakor and the other 11 defendant Emmanuel Kanu, Joshua Emmanuel, Wilson Anyalewechi, Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, Clinton Chimeneze, Gabriel Joshua, Isiaka Husseini, Onyekachi Ferdinand, Amadi Prince, Edison Ojisom, Godwill Obioma, and Chima Onuchukwu had been remanded by the court on Tuesday for “inciting public disturbance” during the protest.
The 13 defendants were arrested at various locations in Abuja during the demonstration on Monday.
Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’I granted bail at N500,000 each, imposing additional conditions. The court ordered all defendants to provide verified National Identification Numbers (NINs), submit three-year tax clearance certificates, and surrender their passports.
The release comes amid heightened attention on the #FreeNnamdiKanu movement and ongoing debates about civil protest rights in Nigeria.
