Sudan Prohibits Imports from Kenya Due to Disputes over Conflict Negotiations.

The decision follows an agreement signed on February 22 in Kenya between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and various Sudanese political factions to establish a rival government against the Sudanese authorities.

Sudan’s leadership has vehemently opposed this development, accusing Kenya of facilitating the RSF’s political ambitions, according to local reports.

On March 13, the Sudanese government declared a trade ban, citing Kenya’s role in hosting discussions involving the RSF and its supporters.

The order, signed by Sudan’s Minister of Trade and Supplies, Omar Ahmed Mohamed Ali, prohibits all goods from entering Sudan from Kenya via land, sea, and air.

Officials stated that the ban is essential for safeguarding Sudan’s national security and will remain effective until further notice, with immediate enforcement mandated.

Sudan depends on Kenya for various imports, including tea, food, and medicine, making the trade ban likely to impact businesses in both nations.

In a show of protest, Sudan recalled its ambassador from Kenya just two days prior to the agreement’s signing. However, Kenya has defended its actions, asserting that it merely facilitated the meetings to aid in achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan, with backing from the United Nations and the African Union.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted in April 2023.

According to the UN, over 20,000 individuals have lost their lives, and 14 million have been displaced from their homes. Some estimates suggest the actual death toll may be significantly higher, potentially reaching around 130,000.

The violence has now extended across most regions of Sudan, exacerbating the crisis. The UN and other international organizations have issued warnings that millions are at risk of starvation as food supplies dwindle.
