Tinubu Celebrates Obasanjo At 89

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo as he marks his 89th birthday.

In a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Obasanjo as an elder statesman whose influence in Nigeria, Africa and the international community remains significant.

The President acknowledged Obasanjo’s courage and sacrifices in service to the nation, recalling his leadership roles as military Head of State between 1976 and 1979 and later as Nigeria’s civilian president from 1999 to 2007.

Tinubu noted that Obasanjo demonstrated commitment to democratic governance when he handed over power to a civilian administration in 1979 after leading the military government.

He also highlighted the former leader’s contributions to preserving Nigeria’s unity during the civil war and his stand against tyranny, which led to his imprisonment during a past military regime.

According to Tinubu, Obasanjo has continued to contribute to national development through intellectual engagement, publications and public interventions on issues affecting Nigeria and the African continent.

The President further acknowledged the former leader’s role in advancing Africa’s political and economic interests on the global stage.

Tinubu prayed for continued good health, strength and wisdom for the former president as he continues to contribute to national development and global discourse.
