Kayode Egbetokun has been replaced as Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, with Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu taking over the top position, a presidency source confirmed to ARISE News on Tuesday.
The source confirmed the development, stating that an official announcement would be made shortly. “AIG Tunji Disu is the new IGP. Confirmed,” the source said, adding that the information had received “double confirmation.”
Sources also say that the former police boss was directed to proceed with handover after a meeting at the Presidential Villa. He is now expected to step aside, bringing an end to a tenure that drew strong criticism from civil society groups and sections of the public.
Taking over is Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, who currently heads the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. He is expected to assume duties immediately.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Further details surrounding the leadership change are expected to be released soon.
