Togo: 30% Increase in the Purchase Price of Cashew Nuts

In Togo, the marketing campaign for cashew nuts officially commenced on Thursday, March 13, 2025, featuring a notable increase in the farmgate price, which is now set at 425 CFA francs per kilogram, up from 325 CFA francs the previous year. This over 30% increase was established by the interprofessional organization of the cashew industry following the conclusion of the second National Cashew Day of Togo (JNAT), which took place in Kara on March 12.

Mawuko Komlan Gozan, president of the Interprofessional Committee for the Cashew Industry in Togo (CIFAT), explained that this price adjustment aims to shield producers from market volatility and enhance their profitability.

In addition to the price increase, the start of this new season is marked by several regulatory measures for the sector. An agreement has been made among producers, buyers, and processors to enforce a minimum production threshold of 20 tonnes before allowing the transportation of nuts to Lomé. Furthermore, penalties will be applied in cases of marketing fraud, which has frequently disrupted the integrity of the industry.

During the launch ceremony, Hounaké Kossivi, the Minister Delegate for Trade, Crafts, and Local Consumption, emphasized the importance of these measures for fostering a more structured and resilient development of the sector.

These changes come at a time when Togolese producers are facing significant challenges. The cashew nut industry has seen a decline, with national production estimated at 34,500 tonnes in 2024, representing a 16% decrease from the 41,000 tonnes recorded in 2023.

This downturn is part of a broader set of challenges linked to climate conditions and global market price fluctuations. In light of these issues, industry stakeholders have pledged to revitalize production and enhance local processing efforts to capture greater added value.
