Togo Clarifies Number of Seats in Upcoming Municipal Elections

Togo’s upcoming municipal elections, originally scheduled for July 10, 2025, have been postponed to Thursday, July 17. The Ministry of Territorial Administration announced the change on Thursday, May 29, citing a presidential decree.

The ministry stated that the electoral calendar was adjusted following requests from political actors, particularly those in the opposition, who unanimously called for a slight delay to allow for better preparation by all stakeholders.

The deadline for submitting applications has also been extended from May 29 to midnight on Sunday, June 1, 2025, providing potential candidates with additional time to finalize their applications and meet administrative requirements.

Early voting for defense, security, and paramilitary forces will now take place on Monday, July 14, three days before the general population. This measure is intended to enable them to maintain order and secure the election on election day.

The election campaign will officially begin on Tuesday, July 1st at midnight and end on Tuesday, July 15th at 11:59 pm, allowing political parties, independent lists, and candidates to present their platforms to voters nationwide.

In a separate announcement, the ministry clarified the number of seats to be filled in the election. The total number of municipal councilors, which had been temporarily increased to 1,667, has been reverted to its original level of 1,527, in accordance with the legal provisions of 2018.

These municipal elections are the second local elections to be held in Togo since the reintroduction of communes in 2019 as part of the country’s decentralization process.
