Togo Expects a 2% Decrease in Fish Production for 2024.

Togo’s fish production reached 23,776 tonnes in 2024, as reported by the Ministry of Fisheries. This figure represents a slight decrease of about 2% from 2023, when the total catch was 24,229 tonnes.

The Maritime region continues to be the leading area for fish production, contributing 15,013 tonnes, followed by the Plateaux region with 6,979 tonnes. The Savanes and Kara regions produced 889 tonnes and 600 tonnes, respectively, while the Central region accounted for 78 tonnes. Additionally, the Lomé Commune added 217 tonnes to the national total.

This reduction in production coincides with the commencement of a five-year plan in 2024, aimed at enhancing the production, processing, and marketing conditions for fishery products. This initiative reflects the authorities’ commitment to bolstering the local industry and decreasing reliance on imports.

To revitalize the sector, Togo has set a target of 25,266 tonnes for 2025. Achieving this goal will rely on the execution of various strategic initiatives outlined in the five-year action plan.

These initiatives include enhancing the sector’s production capabilities, both technically and organizationally. Training programs will be implemented for stakeholders in the industry, and support will be extended to fisheries research and the Interprofessional Council for the Fish Industry (CIFP) to ensure better organization and increased productivity within the sector.
