Togo: Government Reaffirms Commitment to Demographic Dividend.

On April 18, 2025, Prime Minister Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé of Togo met with Mamadou Dicko, the General Administrator of the Center for African Family Studies in Population, Health and Sustainable Development (CEFA-PSD), to review the progress of the demographic dividend in West Africa, with a specific focus on Togo. This meeting was a follow-up to a regional conference held in Lomé, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which convened representatives from seven countries in the region to address issues related to population, health, and sustainable development.

The demographic dividend signifies the potential economic benefits derived from a youthful, educated, and active population that is well-supported. Mr. Dicko noted that the demographic dividend map serves as a strategic resource endorsed by African leaders to mitigate inequality, enhance women’s empowerment, and promote inclusive growth.

He also praised Togo’s recent accession to the World Bank-backed SWEDD (Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend) regional initiative. For CEFA-PSD, headquartered in Lomé, this membership presents new opportunities, positioning the capital as a center for training in reproductive health, empowerment, and equitable development. ‘The goal is to enable states to effectively harness the advantages of the demographic dividend,’ Mr. Dicko stated.
