Togo Leads UEMOA Transport Revenue Growth: Driving Regional Prosperity Through Connectivity

In 2024, Togo emerged as a clear leader in the West African transport service market, accounting for 29.5% of total revenue. This strong performance represents nearly one-third of the regional total and underscores Togo’s growing importance as a logistics and trade hub.

The latest report on foreign trade in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), published by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), highlights this achievement. Côte d’Ivoire followed closely with 26.7%, reinforcing the country’s position as a critical player in regional commerce. Together, both nations contributed more than half of the Union’s total transport revenue.

These numbers go beyond statistics — they reflect a steady transformation across West Africa’s economic landscape. With continued investment in infrastructure and digital systems, the region is unlocking new pathways for growth, competitiveness, and integration.

Togo’s success story is driven by strategic reforms and forward-thinking leadership. The country has invested heavily in infrastructure development, especially around the Port of Lomé, now recognized as one of West Africa’s most efficient deep-sea ports. Enhanced port operations, advanced logistics platforms, and simplified customs procedures have positioned Togo as a gateway for international trade.

Furthermore, Togo’s emphasis on digital transformation in logistics has accelerated its progress. By adopting innovative tracking systems and streamlining border processes, the nation has reduced trade delays and improved supply-chain efficiency. These measures have not only increased revenue but also built investor confidence and regional trust.

In contrast, Côte d’Ivoire continues to consolidate its strength through the modernization of transport corridors and port facilities. Its thriving export market, especially in agriculture and manufacturing, depends heavily on reliable logistics networks. Through targeted investments, the country is transforming Abidjan into a dynamic transport and trade center that serves the wider UEMOA zone.

Across the region, transport services have become the backbone of economic integration. Efficient logistics systems reduce costs, connect markets, and expand access to global trade. They also attract private sector investment and create jobs that drive inclusive growth.

The BCEAO report also highlights the growing collaboration among UEMOA member states. Shared policies on trade facilitation, infrastructure funding, and digital innovation are helping to harmonize standards and improve competitiveness. This momentum reflects the region’s collective commitment to sustainable growth and regional self-reliance.

However, experts believe that for UEMOA to reach its full potential, countries must continue to invest in connectivity and workforce development. Improved transport corridors, skilled labour, and public-private partnerships remain vital for sustaining progress. As climate concerns grow, the shift toward green transport solutions will also play a defining role in the region’s future competitiveness.

Togo’s example offers valuable lessons for the continent. It shows that with vision, consistency, and innovation, small economies can achieve outsized results. By linking infrastructure growth with efficient policy execution, Togo has demonstrated how strategic planning can deliver measurable national and regional impact.

As West Africa continues to evolve, transport will remain a key driver of its transformation. A connected region is a prosperous one, and through stronger collaboration, UEMOA countries can accelerate trade, attract investment, and uplift millions.

With Togo leading the charge and Côte d’Ivoire close behind, the path toward regional prosperity through connectivity has never been clearer.
