A new, modern sports complex has opened in the Agoè-Nyivé 4 commune of Lomé, Togo, as part of the third phase of the Lomé Urban Environment Project (PEUL III). The project, financed by the French Development Agency (AFD) to the tune of 750 million FCFA (approximately €1.14 million or $1.23 million USD), was officially handed over to municipal authorities on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, by the Greater Lomé Autonomous District (DAGL), the project’s managing entity.
The complex, spanning 1.5 hectares, features multiple sports fields for volleyball, handball, basketball, and tennis. It also includes multi-purpose spaces designed to host community events such as shows and exhibitions, alongside facilities for gymnastics, running, and jumping. Dedicated children’s play areas and administrative buildings, including a management office, storage, and an infirmary, are also part of the new infrastructure.
DAGL authorities state that the complex aims to promote youth sports participation and strengthen social cohesion within local communities. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve the living environment through sustainable development, health promotion, and enhanced social connections.
“Recognizing sport as a powerful tool for social integration and a key element of education, the District supports various sporting activities across its territory, in collaboration with civil society organizations and sports federations,” stated DAGL Governor Zouréhatou Kassah-Traoré.
French Ambassador to Togo, Augustin Favereau, praised the initiative, emphasizing its positive social and environmental impact. “We prioritize people, the environment, and inclusion through sport in our development actions. Together with our partners in the European Union, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting projects of this nature,” he said.
This project follows the successful implementation of a similar sports complex in the Golfe 1 commune, also financed under PEUL III and coordinated by the District of Greater Lomé. The PEUL III project highlights the ongoing efforts to improve urban infrastructure and promote sustainable development in Togo’s capital city.
