Togo Obtains 40 Billion FCFA from BOAD to Tackle Energy Crises.

Togo has recently obtained 40 billion CFA francs in funding from the West African Development Bank (BOAD) to tackle pressing expenses in the energy sector, which are anticipated to cover outstanding electricity bills.

This announcement was made following the 145th meeting of the BOAD Board of Directors, which took place yesterday, March 26, 2025, in Lomé. The financial assistance is intended to ensure the ongoing provision of public electricity services amid a challenging regional situation characterized by supply interruptions from neighboring nations, particularly Nigeria.

The Togolese Electricity Company (CEET), the primary operator in the energy sector, has been grappling with persistent financial challenges for several years. In 2020, BOAD had previously allocated 25 billion CFA francs to the public entity for similar purposes.

Concurrently, structural reforms have been initiated within CEET. According to government officials, these reforms are designed to enhance financial stability, improve governance, and achieve the target of universal electricity access by 2030.

Data from 2022 indicates that CEET sourced 52.27% of its electricity from imports (primarily from Ghana and Nigeria), while 47.73% came from domestic sources, including the Lomé Thermal Power Station (ContourGlobal), Kekeli Efficient Power, AMEA Solar, and CEB (Nangbéto).
