The maintenance of the West African Gas Pipeline is currently underway. Initiated on February 5, the work is scheduled to conclude on March 2, 2024. This maintenance may lead to interruptions in electricity supply across Togo, Benin, and Ghana. Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET), the national power utility of Togo, is proactively developing strategies to mitigate the impact of these disruptions on the local population.
Should disruptions occur, Togolese authorities plan to utilize liquid fuels to operate thermal power plants and may import up to 35 MW of additional electricity. Furthermore, there are intentions to expedite the installation of a 25 MW turbine linked to the West African Gas Pipeline (WAPG).
The gas pipeline plays a vital role in delivering natural gas to thermal power facilities in the region, significantly influencing the energy supply for Togo, Benin, and Ghana. Togo’s electricity generation is heavily dependent on Nigerian gas, underscoring the importance of this maintenance work.
In addition to these technical measures, authorities may consider implementing energy rationing to ensure equitable distribution during this maintenance period. If necessary, a daily rationing plan akin to those previously employed during disruptions in 2024 could be activated.
