Togo: South Korea Allocated 3.5 Billion FCFA for Agriculture and Environmental Sustainability Initiatives.

South Korea has provided funding amounting to 5.7 million dollars, or roughly 3.5 billion FCFA, to Togo to aid two projects focused on agricultural development and anti-deforestation, which were inaugurated on February 28, 2025, in Lomé during a formal ceremony. This event was attended by the representative of the Korean Ambassador to Togo, Moon Dongkyu.

The first initiative, named “Development of Socio-economic Infrastructures to Support Rural Communities in Togo,” has been allocated 3.5 million dollars, translating to over 2 billion FCFA. This project aims to implement post-harvest solutions, provide solar modules for the treatment of agricultural products, and establish drinking water units. Additionally, an incubation program is set to enhance the abilities of youth and women in managing green businesses.

The second initiative, titled “Strengthening the Resilience of Populations to Climate Change Through Sustainable Management of Forest Resources,” features a budget of 2.2 million dollars, or more than 1 billion FCFA. It encompasses enhancing local governance and knowledge management in shea parks, launching a reforestation campaign using high-quality shea seedlings, and creating a system for selection and post-harvest management to boost income. This project aims to enhance the protection and production of shea while engaging women’s and youth cooperatives in a sustainable framework.

These programs, executed by the Global Green Growth Institute and financed by the South Korean government, align with Togo’s commitments to address climate change and meet the Sustainable Development Goals. “In the current climate change scenario, it is essential for Togo to bolster the resilience of rural communities and foster suitable infrastructure,” emphasized Dindiogue Kolani, Chief of Staff of the Minister of Agriculture.

As stated by the official, “The consequences of global warming, including rising temperatures, extended droughts, floods, and land degradation, particularly impact rural areas that heavily rely on natural resources for their survival.”

This latest support from Korea adds to its previous assistance to Togo in the realms of agriculture and environmental conservation. Specifically, Korea is backing the execution of the Kara Agropole project and has also financed an initiative for sustainable, equitable access to essential services for children in the North, among others.
