Togo is reviewing its national strategy for implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement after five years. Members of the AfCFTA Strategy Technical Committee met last week (May 28-30) in Kpalimé for a workshop to evaluate the strategy’s implementation from 2019-2024.
The aim was to conduct a comprehensive final evaluation of the five-year matrix of priority actions within the strategy, informing preparations for its revision and considering new developments.
The review also highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the national strategy in a competitive environment and measured the execution level of the priority action program.

Participants assessed the coherence of activities and synergy of the sectoral action plan within the AfCFTA framework, providing recommendations and identifying constraints, opportunities, and new challenges, including those from additional protocols, operational instruments, and regional or global dynamics.
The Ministry of Trade initiated the meeting with support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Adopted in 2019, Togo’s AfCFTA strategy targets several value chains, including agriculture, phosphate processing, oil production, and services (telecoms, business services, financial services, and tourism).
