Togo will soon Launch an Initiative to Modernize Agriculture.

Togo is launching a new agricultural modernization initiative designed to sustainably transform the sector over the next decade (2025-2034). The ProMAT (Program for the Modernization of Agriculture in Togo) outlines the necessary actions to enhance agriculture’s role in economic growth, foster job creation, and promote social inclusion. This program was introduced last week to stakeholders in the sector and potential financial partners.

The primary goal of the program is to boost agricultural performance by tackling current challenges such as climate change and the competitiveness of local products. This is particularly significant for a nation where agriculture is a fundamental economic pillar and crucial for food security.

The program is organized around four strategic pillars. Its main focus is to bolster agricultural production and enhance the resilience of cropping systems against climate-related risks. Additionally, it seeks to increase the value of agricultural products and improve market access, which is vital for ensuring stable and profitable opportunities for producers.

A dedicated component addresses access to financing and the encouragement of private initiatives, which are essential for stimulating investment in the sector. Furthermore, enhancing agricultural governance is a key element of this program, aimed at improving the effectiveness of public policies and fostering better coordination among various stakeholders.

The implementation of this initiative, set to commence shortly, aligns with the country’s previous agricultural programs and projects, including the National Investment and Food Security Program (PNIASA) and the National Agricultural Investment, Food and Nutritional Security Program (PNIASAN).
