Togolese Political Stakeholders Discuss Municipal Election Preparations

With the next municipal elections scheduled for July 10, 2025, Togolese political stakeholders convened on Monday, May 19, 2025, in Lomé, for the 20th session of the Permanent Consultation Framework (CPC) to assess the process.

This dialogue forum, chaired by Mr. Tchassona Traoré, provided an opportunity to evaluate the progress of preparations and adjust key parameters of the electoral process.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Reduction of Electoral Deposit: There was a consensus on the need to reduce the electoral deposit, especially to encourage greater participation by women. A proposal to reduce the deposit by half for women was welcomed for its inclusive potential across the 117 municipalities.
  • Public Funding for Political Parties: The current budget of 500 million CFA francs for public funding of political parties was deemed insufficient given the number of expected candidates. Representatives called for an upward revision to better support campaigns.
  • Issuance of Residence Certificates: The issuance of residence certificates, often subject to interpretation, was also discussed. A harmonization note will be sent to mayors, according to the Minister of Territorial Administration, Hodabalo Awaté.

Further meetings are planned to refine the arrangements before the vote.
