The cultural and creative industries (CCI) sector in Togo is projected to generate $166 million in revenue in 2024 (over 100 billion FCFA), accounting for around 1% of the national GDP. This information is provided by a study conducted by the French Development Agency (AFD), which examines key areas such as music, audiovisual, cinema, and digital arts.
The same report indicates that CCIs encompass economic fields centered around the creation, production, and distribution of content that possesses significant cultural, artistic, or intellectual value, employing nearly 135,000 individuals (134,293), which represents 4% of the workforce. The sector is notably inclusive, with women occupying 52% of the jobs (70,987) and young individuals aged 15 to 24 holding 15% (20,754). The exportation of cultural goods and services brought in USD 24 million in revenue, showcasing the potential for the Togolese market to expand internationally.
However, a major issue facing the sector is that 92% of jobs are informal (123,953 people). The informal sector itself accounts for a turnover of $51.98 million.
Togolese Cinema: the need for better organization
Producing 70 films annually, including 6 international collaborations, Togolese cinema is progressively making its mark. Nonetheless, it continues to strive for more professionalism. The implementation of a Code of Cinema and Animated Image, along with the establishment of the National Fund for Support to the Cinematographic and Audiovisual Industry (FoNSICA), aims to organize the market and enhance local production.
Nonetheless, various obstacles persist, including poor access to financing, insufficient technical expertise, and limited distribution infrastructure.
With only two cinemas functioning regularly, the distribution of local productions remains a significant hurdle.
