Troops Reject N13 Million Bribe from Terrorists in Bold Plateau Operation

In a remarkable display of discipline and integrity, Nigerian troops under Operation Safe Haven turned down a N13 million bribe offered by terrorists in Plateau State. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) made this revelation during its bi-weekly update on ongoing military operations across the country.

Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed the incident while addressing journalists on Thursday in Abuja. According to him, troops had received a distress call reporting terrorist activity in the region. The troops swiftly responded and launched a successful offensive, which led to the arrest of two suspected terrorists.

During the arrest, the suspects attempted to bribe the soldiers with N13 million to secure their freedom. The troops immediately rejected the offer and arrested the suspects without hesitation. General Kangye described the incident as a strong reflection of the professionalism and integrity now guiding military operations across the country.

The operation occurred between July 9 and 16, 2025, and was part of a wider mission across Plateau and Kaduna States. Troops engaged terrorists in several local government areas, including Bassa, Barkin Ladi, South Wase, Riyom, and Jos East in Plateau State. They also conducted security operations in Kaura and Sanga local government areas of Kaduna State.

According to Kangye, the operation was successful in neutralising threats, arresting criminals, and recovering weapons. He explained that these efforts are part of a larger push to eliminate insurgents, bandits, and criminal networks threatening peace in the region.

He commended the troops for their swift response, bravery, and uncompromising stand against corruption. He said the Defence Headquarters views this conduct as a model for all personnel in the ongoing fight against insecurity.

In addition to the attempted bribe, the troops recovered firearms, ammunition, motorcycles, and communication devices. Intelligence gathered from the suspects is currently being used to track down other members of the terror network. The suspects have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

Kangye reiterated the Nigerian Armed Forces’ commitment to restoring peace and stability across troubled zones. He said recent gains in the North Central and North West are the result of improved coordination, intelligence sharing, and community engagement. He encouraged citizens to continue supporting military operations by providing timely and accurate information.

He also warned criminal elements to desist from violence and surrender peacefully. He said the military would not be distracted by bribes or pressure from political actors. Rather, troops will stay focused on protecting lives, securing property, and upholding national unity.

General Kangye urged communities in Plateau and Kaduna to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. He said the military will continue to act decisively and professionally in confronting threats across the country.

As military operations intensify, the rejection of the bribe sends a strong message. Nigeria’s troops are not only fighting with courage, but also with character. Their actions demonstrate that hope for a safer and more accountable Nigeria is still very much alive.
