The Zamfara State Government has formalized a new partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding access to electricity through solar energy solutions.
The signing ceremony, held on Wednesday in Abuja, was led by Governor Dauda Lawal, who emphasized the state’s natural advantage in solar power generation due to its year-round intense sunlight. He noted that Zamfara presents a prime location for harvesting solar energy on a large scale.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the event also featured a roundtable session with energy stakeholders. Discussions centered on revitalizing Zamfara’s power sector through innovation, renewable energy, and inclusive development.
Governor Lawal remarked that his administration inherited a state deeply affected by energy poverty, with widespread power shortages crippling public services and economic growth. He stressed that addressing this challenge is essential for advancing social justice and improving the quality of life for residents.
“We are committed to ending the cycle of energy deprivation,” the Governor said. “This MoU signals a new era of clean, reliable, and inclusive power solutions for our people.”
The agreement with REA will focus on deploying off-grid and mini-grid solar systems across rural and underserved communities in Zamfara, helping to bridge electricity access gaps and stimulate local economic development.
Officials from the REA welcomed the partnership and reaffirmed their support for Zamfara’s efforts to lead in renewable energy adoption, pledging full collaboration in project implementation and expansion.
This initiative aligns with the broader national goal of promoting sustainable energy and ensuring that no region is left behind in Nigeria’s energy transition journey.
