The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cleared the manufacturer of BON Bread following an investigation into public concerns over the product’s unusually long shelf life.
In a press release dated May 17, 2026, NAFDAC confirmed that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, makers of BON Bread, complied with all regulatory standards after laboratory investigations and facility inspections.
The agency said the investigation began after a social media claim on April 13, 2026 alleged that a loaf of bread remained free from mould for more than two months.
According to the statement, although the complainant did not identify the bread brand, the manufacturer publicly acknowledged that the bread in question was BON Bread and described the allegation as misleading.
NAFDAC said it immediately launched a scientific investigation following public reactions online.
“As part of the investigation, the Agency conducted an inspection of the company’s bakery facility in Abuja and collected bread samples from both the production site and the open market for laboratory analysis,” the statement said.
The agency stated that findings showed the bread contained calcium propionate, an approved preservative widely used in bread production, within internationally accepted safety limits.
“Findings revealed that the bread contained calcium propionate, an approved preservative commonly used in bread production, within the permissible limits specified by the Codex Alimentarius, the internationally recognised food standards framework,” NAFDAC stated.
The agency also confirmed that laboratory tests found no harmful or prohibited substances in the bread samples.
“Laboratory analysis further confirmed that the bread samples did not contain objectionable substances, including bromate or non-nutritive sweeteners,” the statement added.
NAFDAC further stated that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited had maintained regulatory compliance since beginning operations in 2006.
“NAFDAC also confirmed that the company has maintained regulatory compliance since commencing operations in 2006 and has successfully undergone several licence renewals without penalties or product recalls,” the agency said.
The agency assured the public that the company was not in breach of any food safety regulations.
“The Agency therefore assures the public that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited is not in violation of any NAFDAC regulation,” the statement added.
NAFDAC also encouraged Nigerians to report concerns about regulated products through any of its offices nationwide or through its call centre for prompt investigation.
