Presidential Aide Challenges Peter Obi’s One-Term Pledge

A presidential aide has questioned former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected president.

Obi made the comment during an interview clip set to air on News Central TV, where he said he would not remain in office beyond four years. He said his focus was stability and insisted he would leave after a single term.

Reacting in a post on X, presidential aide Bayo Onanuga dismissed the promise and referenced Obi’s political history.

“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga said.

He pointed to Obi’s time in the All Progressives Grand Alliance while governor of Anambra State, saying the former governor later left the party for the Peoples Democratic Party.

He also criticised Obi’s movement across political platforms over the years.

“Peter Obi’s pledges have always been short-lived. He ultimately abandoned APGA for the PDP, and since then, he has drifted from one political platform to another—a political rolling stone,” he said.

Onanuga added that Obi’s record raises doubts about his consistency, saying his promises do not last.

“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances,” he said.

Ahead of the 2027 presidential election scheduled for January, political realignments continue within opposition circles. Peter Obi recently resigned from the African Democratic Congress, citing internal disputes, court cases and what he described as a difficult party environment.
