The Rivers State Police Command in partnership with GS Foundation has unveiled a state-of-the-art “Gender Lab,” a facility designed to revolutionise the investigation and prosecution of gender-related cases in the State.
In a statement on Tuesday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe, revealed that the ultra-modern Gender Lab, situated within the Rivers State Police Command ( SCID), represents a bold step toward technology-driven policing and victim-centered justice delivery.
The police spokesperson said the initiative will strengthen the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
Agabe disclosed that “the facility combines advanced forensic technology, confidential counseling spaces, digital evidence management systems, and coordinated legal support services to ensure that gender violence victims receive protection, dignity, and swift access to justice”.
The police spokesperson said the Gender Lab will serve as a specialised center for: “Advanced forensic evidence collection and preservation. Victim support and psychosocial services. Training and capacity building for officers on gender-sensitive investigations. Data-driven analysis of gender-related crimes to strengthen preventive policing strategies.”
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, the representative of GS Foundation, Peter Heepen described the initiative as a transformative intervention aimed at strengthening institutional responses to domestic violence, abuse, exploitation, and other gender-related offences.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, applauded the initiative and reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and improving investigative standards through innovation and strategic partnerships.
Adepoju further commended the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for his relentless drive toward modern, intelligence-led, and technology-based policing across the country.
He noted that the establishment of the Gender Lab aligns is focused on professionalism, accountability, human rights protection, and improved service delivery.
Adepoju also expressed appreciation to the international partners and supporting organisations whose collaboration and technical support made the establishment of the facility possible, describing the initiative as a significant milestone in advancing community safety and justice reform in Rivers State.
