Tinubu is Strengthening His Security Architecture

In moments of national recalibration, certain commentators develop a dangerous habit. They mistake expansion for displacement. When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu authorises the reinforcement of Nigeria’s security framework, some interpret it as an attempt to sideline existing institutions rather than build upon them. This view is not only misleading but also undermines the urgent need for a more robust, coordinated, and effective national security system.

President Tinubu’s approach to security is rooted in realism. Nigeria faces multiple threats — from banditry and insurgency in the North to separatist agitations and cult-related violence in the South. Rather than relying solely on a centralised policing structure that has long been overstretched, the President is pushing for layered security architecture that includes stronger federal support, enhanced intelligence sharing, and greater state-level involvement.

A Strategic Expansion, Not Replacement

The idea of state police, which President Tinubu has openly supported, is not about weakening the Nigeria Police Force. It is about complementing it. By allowing states to establish well-regulated police formations, the federal government aims to bring security closer to the people. Local knowledge, faster response times, and community trust are expected to improve significantly under this model.

At the same time, the President has continued to strengthen federal security agencies. Recent approvals for additional forest guards, specialised units, and improved welfare packages for troops demonstrate a clear commitment to enhancing capacity at every level. These moves are not contradictory — they are complementary.

Results Over Rhetoric

In the last few months, security operations have recorded notable gains in several states. The military and police have intensified efforts against insurgents, kidnappers, and bandits. While challenges remain, the trajectory shows increased operational momentum. President Tinubu’s insistence on synergy between federal and state actors is gradually yielding better coordination.

Critics who frame every security reform as a political power grab miss the bigger picture. Nigeria’s security challenges are too complex for a one-size-fits-all solution. A strengthened architecture that combines federal oversight with state-level responsiveness is not only logical but necessary.

The Path Forward

President Tinubu has made it clear that the ultimate goal is a safer Nigeria where citizens can live, work, and thrive without fear. This requires honest reforms, adequate funding, modern technology, and motivated personnel. It also demands that leaders at all levels put national interest above sectional or partisan considerations.

The expansion of Nigeria’s security framework under President Tinubu should be seen for what it is: a pragmatic response to evolving threats. Those who mistake it for displacement do a disservice to the urgent task of securing the nation. True patriotism lies in supporting reforms that work, not in resisting change simply because it challenges old assumptions.

As the administration continues to strengthen security architecture, Nigerians deserve honest assessment, constructive criticism, and collective support — not cynical narratives that confuse expansion with displacement.
